I had a great question from Cara, who has two really cool old-fashioned English Bulldogs, Justice and Sophie, and a lovely rescued kitty named Jelli. You can see her questions about nutrition in the previous blog posting, but she also had this question which deserves a space of its own.
I did start the dogs on Platinum Performance Plus this week. The benefits seem to overlap with Nordic Naturals. Are we supposed to give them both supplements or just one?
Yes, Cara, you do need both! (and I actually mean “you” as in we humans, too!)
The omega-3 marine lipids (a fancy term for “fish oil”) have the most bioavailable form of omega-3 fatty acids because your body can utilize just as they are. I use and recommend Nordic Naturals brand for my pets and myself because all their fish oil products come from Norway, which has a long tradition of fishing and creating omega-3 oils in a responsible fashion. Fish oil reduces inflammation through the body on a cellular basis, and offers a very long list of general health benefits.
Platinum Performance is primarily a joint supplement, which also has omega-3 fatty acids (in a plant form, which the body has to convert in order to utilize the benefits). However it is the source and combination of glucosamine and MSM, which act naturally and powerfully together to reduce inflammation in the joints and increase flexibility and decrease pain and stiffness. And my canine and human family members all take different joint supplements from Platinum Performance, too!
